Enjoying Ebino

Ebino is a land abounding in history as well as natural beauty.


Bishamon's Waterfall (毘沙門の滝 bishamon no taki)

Bishamon is one of Buddhism's Seven Gods of Good Fortune and is said to have stayed in a nearby temple for a period in the late 1600s.

Waters fall approximately 20 meters in total and are complemented by one kilometer of secluded walking trails maintained by community volunteers. (map

Kuruson River Valley (狗留孫峡 kuruson kyō)

The valley was used as a sacred training ground for priests as early as 700 BC and the ruins of the second oldest Zen temple in Japan can be found here. It is said to be the birthplace of Kuruson(Sanskrit : Krakucchanda), one of the seven previous incarnations of Buddha.

Fishing is also possible. Please keep in mind however that a permit is required. Yearly permits cost 3,000 yen and daily permits are 500 yen. They can be obtained at the following shop.

Encampment Pond (陣の池 jin no ike)

The Ito Army set up camp beside this truly beautiful spring water pond before the famous 1572 Battle of Kisakibaru in nearby Ikejima.

This location was used in Kazuo Kuroki’s film, “Utsukushii Natsu Kirishima.” (English title: A Boy’s Summer in 1945)
Fireflies are known to come out in early June.

Ebino Plateau (えびの高原 ebino kōgen)

In 1934, the Ebino Plateau was designated Japan’s first national park.

Battle of Kisakibaru Historic Site (木崎原古戦場 kisakibaru kosenjō)

On May 4th, 1572, a fierce battle took place here between the troops of Shimazu and Ito. The Rokujizo-to (Jizo of the Six States of Existence) was built by the war lord Shimazu as a memorial to casualties on both sides. There is also a monument to the poetry of Yoshihiro Shimazu. (map

 This festival and vigil is a memorial for the soldiers who died at Kisakibaru.

●Evening Cherry Tree Lighting (夜桜ライトアップ yozakura light up)

Late March - Early April
 From late March to early April, two thousand cherry trees and two hundred camellias are lit up for evening viewing in the park.

The Buddhist Priest Kanematsu (金松法然 kanematsu hōnen)

Kanematsu was a powerful priest who settled in Kurishita, a district famous for producing shōchū(a Japanese liquor made from sweet potatoes). He was known for encouraging generosity and selflessness as well as tirelessly helping those in times of need.

He was also incidentally a heavy drinker. It is said that his last words before his death in 1777 were, "Bring an offering of shochu to my shrine and I will grant you one wish. I shall grant not a second nor accommodate greed."

Even today, people come from far and wide with wishes in hand, to give offerings of shōchū. (map

Masaki Station (真幸駅 masaki eki)

Masaki was the first train station in Miyazaki prefecture. Boarding passes from this unattended station are popular, as the name means “enter true happiness.” (map

 The Belton Auto Campground on the Yatake Plateau affords a breathtaking view of the new year’s first sunrise.

First Saturday in March
 Spring planting season is celebrated with this annual market. Approximately 100 local shops and around 30 open-air booths with gardening tools, line the streets.

 Prayers are conducted for a safe mountain climbing season.

First Saturday and Sunday of February
 This historic event is the largest market in southern Kyushu. Approximately 450 shops offering items such as plants, antiques, and specialty products line the streets in front of Kyomachi station. Around 250,000 people come annually for these two kilometers of shopping.

Mid-April
 The Sendai River and Kirishima Mountain Range are visible from this beautiful running course.

Nishikawakita District Sugawara Shrine (西川北区 菅原神社 nishikawakitaku sugawara jinja)

●Jumping Cow Festival (牛越祭 ushigoe matsuri)

July 28
 This event, in which we pray for the health of our livestock, boasts over 400 years of tradition. It’s a unique festival in which cows are encouraged to jump over a log raised 50 cm above the ground.
